What was once a tired, overgrown, and unsafe outdoor area has been completely transformed into a bright, welcoming garden space full of life, colour, and purpose – and we’re beyond excited (and just a little bit proud!) to finally share the journey with you.

Its not just about creating a  nice-looking space (although we think it looks amazing!) – this has been about building something meaningful for the people who use RCH. A space where people can pause, sit, chat, reflect, or just enjoy a bit of peace among the planters and pathways.

This transformation didn’t happen overnight – and it definitely didn’t happen alone.

💚 Where It All Began..

The seed of this idea grew from a simple need: to turn an unusable, neglected space into something that truly reflected the heart of RCH – a place for people, community and care.

Our lead supporter, The Morrisons Foundation, awarded us a vital grant that allowed us to get the project off the ground. Their commitment to helping local charities make a difference and gave us the foundation to build something truly special.

🛠️ The Local Heroes Behind It All.

What followed was nothing short of incredible. A team of brilliant local people and businesses stepped up, giving their time, skills and resources  completely free of charge – not for recognition, but simply because they care. These are the people who made it happen:

▪️Econ Engineering – for the stunning laser-cut screen dividers that now frame the garden with striking design and character. These eye-catching panels add a real wow-factor and help define the space beautifully – more about style than privacy and absolutely full of personality.

▪️Russ and Charlie Addyman (A1 Truck & Plant Hire) – for taking on the heavy work, digging out the old garden, clearing the space, and carting away all the waste. They were among the first to get stuck in and helped set the wheels in motion.

▪️Ripon Men’s Shed – for their craftmanship in creating our beautiful wooden benches. These aren’t  just places to sit – they’re pieces of care made by local hands for local people.

▪️ML Taylor Joinery – for sorting the skips, coordinating the resin surfacing, doing much of the leg work, and helping pull the whole project together. Their behind-the-scenes effort was tireless, and they worked shoulder to shoulder with the person who inspired this project from the very beginning.

🌟The Heart Behind the Project

…our amazing trustee Katie. Her vision was the spark behind this entire transformation. From planning and problem-solving to shaping the overall look and feel of the garden, and guiding the direction of the project. Katie’s commitment to RCH and the community we serve has been the driving force from day one. Without her, this garden would still be a dream.

🪷A Garden with Purpose

We don’t have flowerbeds or rolling lawns – what we do have is a carefully thought-out space filled with raised planters, smart pathways and hand-made features. Its designed for comfort, accessibility, and connection.

Whether  someone wants to enjoy a quiet cuppa outside, sit with a friend, or just admire the plants and fresh air, there’s now a space that invites that moment. and that’s what it’s all about – creating something useful, peaceful and community-led.

☀️Looking Ahead

This is just the beginning. As the seasons change, so will the garden – and we’ll continue adding new plants, fresh displays, and community touches along the way.

We hope everyone who visits RCH enjoys the garden as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it. It’s a space that was built with love, energy and teamwork – and we think it shows.

From a forgotten corner to a flourishing focal point – we think you’ll agree, it’s blooming brilliant.

And of course, a big thank you to all out trustees, staff, volunteers, regular hirers, visitors, and guests who have supported us along the way – your encouragement has meant the world. 💚
